Today was a good day at school. The lesson was easy: hand out review sheets for the midterm exam, help students when absolutely necessary, and enter grades/hand back papers. I tried hard to "enjoy" the students and "build relationships" with them. That's the easy part.
Our staff meeting included more cheerleading done by our principal in hopes of inspiring us to teach on Saturdays, tutor after school, meet with our departments when not required, turn our lesson plans in on Fridays, etc, etc. The encouragement of being paid for these extras is alluring for some teachers... but I have 3 kids who need me to supervise homework, a husband who needs help putting food on the table, and a commute longer than most on staff. Then the "by the way"came: the new teacher evaluation forms are 10 pages longer than before. Get ready!
One item I'm divided on (emotionally) is the Take Back Our School group to which I was invited to join. Since the invitation came from the assistant principal, who I thought disliked me, I am flattered yet puzzled by my ability to contribute. My classroom management skills are not as strong as some. Its a way for me to connect with other staff in professional capacity and for me to feel support while taking on the world in the classroom. Tomorrow I give the midterm. Thursday I give my "What stresses Mrs. C out?" lesson. Gotta find where the hope is...
